Course work in social and behavioral sciences is desirable, but not essential. Interest in a career working in some capacity with diverse youth and/or families, especially in under-resourced communities, is highly desirable. Brief Summary of what is expected from the student:
Currently, we are seeking motivated, personable, and conscientious undergraduate students to serve as mentors to 6th-8th grade students in the Chicago Public Schools as contributing team members for the implementation of a trauma-informed preventive mental health intervention that we are investigating the effectiveness of using a randomized controlled study design. We provide transportation to and from the schools. Mentors need to have availability from approximately 2:30 - 6 on a Tu, Wed, or Thursday for both the fall and spring semesters. While the serving as a mentor is itself provides valuable experience with research (e.g., importance of fidelity to intervention protocols, collection of process evaluation data from participating youth), those interested can be supported with deeper involvement after a minimum of one semester satisfactory performance as a mentor.
