    Research Interest:
    Protein and peptide structure and folding studied by optical spectroscopy and modeling structure and spectra with computational methods

    Minimum time commitment in hours per week: 6

    Qualifications of a Student:
    Interest in questions of biopolymer structure; Credit in 1st semester and/or concurrent registration in 2nd of at least one relevant course, such as:
    biochemistry, instrumental chemistry, or physical chemistry

    Brief Summary of what is expected from the student:
    Interest in exploring what can be learned with physical methods such as spectrosocopy about peptide or protein structure. Students will make appropriate samples using purchased or provided peptides or proteins, and measure spectra (UV, CD, fluorescence, IR, etc.) and learn to interpret it. If student has interest and ability, some experience with computer calculations or programming is very useful here, we will model spectra or structure using quantum chemical or molecular dynamics methods.
    The important issue is that the student must be quite independent, as there are no graduate students in the group to consult with and I travel a lot so the work can be intermittent and thus may be more difficult to schedule.
