Research Interest:
We study the behavior of interfaces in soft matter, principally in liquids. I am currently (Spring 2018) seeking a student for this upcoming Fall to investigate nanoparticle ordering at interfaces. This area of research addresses basic questions on the behavior of nanoparticles near interfaces, but is also related to several areas of application, including the use of nanoparticle arrays to make novel 2-dimensional materials. A background in 200-level physics and/or physical chemistry is required. Brief Summary of what is expected from the student:
Undergraduate students in my lab have gotten involved in a variety of different tasks over the years. These include experimental lab work to record microscopic images of interfacial structures and measurements of interfacial tension. Some students have been involved in the analysis of data from x-ray experiments. This may include software development. More advanced students have been involved in x-ray scattering studies at Argonne National Laboratory that is about 1/2 hour drive from UIC.
