The Chicago Honorary Brown Sign Project will celebrate the culture and history of Chicago as revealed through its over 1,000 honorary brown signs posted throughout the city’s neighborhoods. This web-based archive will animate a Chicago story through oral histories, research-based history, photographs, and archival footage. These often ignored honorary brown signs offer a vehicle for understanding and re-invigorating Chicago's unique narrative.

Minimum time commitment in hours per week: 2 (flexible)

    Qualifications of a Student:
Prerequisite: English 161 and English Major. Student should have some writing and research experience. Knowledge of a data sorting tool like excel or numbers is necessary. Strong organization and communication skills preferred. Honors College students are encouraged to apply. (Expectations beyond data cross-referencing are listed below.)

Brief Summary of what is expected from the student:
Student will assist me in conceptualizing and organizing a database of current Chicago honorary brown signs (syncing with available lists through the city of Chicago). Historical data on individual honorees as well as local neighborhood history will be collected and catalogued for the project.

After data has been catalogued (and in order to establish a project prototype), student may assist in interviewing and then writing narratives reflecting the range of people and experiences the brown signs honor. Since this project offers a variety of opportunities, the interests and strengths of the student will be considered in assigning specific tasks.
