College: Urban Planning and Public Affairs Department: Public Administration
    Title: Assistant Professor

Participating in the Chancellor’s Undergraduate Research Awards program: Yes

    Research Interest:
My research interests are at the intersection of social policy, health and education. Broadly, I am interested in how adverse experiences affect children and families and the role of public policy in ameliorating these effects. Among my current projects I study food assistance programs and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program in particular, the effects of neighborhood violent crime on children, air quality and health, and more recently the effect of the opioid crisis on children and families. I am also interested in immigration and have some projects related to that. My research uses quantitative methods relying on administrative datasets and large surveys with an emphasis on causal inference.

Minimum time commitment in hours per week: 5

    Qualifications of a Student:
Minimum gpa 3.0, experience working with statistical software (Stata preferred but not required), excel, and GIS. Understanding of statistics and the basics of multiple regression. Basic understanding of Spanish is a plus as some data may be in this language.

Brief Summary of what is expected from the student:
I would like to work with a student who wants to gain experience doing quantitative work in policy analysis. Most of the work will involve analyzing and building datasets from various sources, geocoding, as well as making maps and visualizations. There may be some literature reviews involved as well.
