Participating in the Chancellor’s Undergraduate Research Awards program: Yes

    Research Interest:
Broadly, my research interests are centered on academic achievement and high school completion among urban, minority youth. A lot of my work has centered on Latino youth specifically. My work encompasses a broad range of topics that, for example, include delinquency, gang involvement, school transitions, and violence.

Currently I am working on a longitudinal study in which I am tracking individuals who were in a research study of mine 25 years ago when they were in their second year of high school. This is a qualitative study that involves interviewing former study participants in the context of a 1.5-2-hour structured interview conducted in my research lab or in the former participant's home.

Ultimately the aim of this study is to document the longitudinal outcomes for youth who had successful high school careers (graduated) vs. those whose challenges resulted in dropping out of high school.

Minimum time commitment in hours per week: 10

    Qualifications of a Student:
Students wishing to work with me on my research should have had psychology 100 (Introduction to Psychology) and 242 (Research Methods) and be psychology majors or minors. Students should have a GPA of no less than 3.2. Previous research experience is welcome but not required. Spanish-speaking, reading, and writing ability is highly desired for this project

Brief Summary of what is expected from the student:
The following are likely activities in which Research Assistants would participate under the direction of the faculty member and/or her research staff:

    1. locating former research participants using various search strategies

    2. data collection (observing interviews or helping in conducting them)

    3. data reduction for analysis which may require translation/transcription of data

    4. data analysis (compiling responses to interview questions for all participants), and

    5. preparation of papers for presentation and publication
