    Research Interest:
COMMUNITY-BASED HEALTH OUTREACH RESEARCH. With medical students from UIC, Family Medicine is conducting monthly health screenings at a church in Pilsen. We are designing a prevalence study to describe the health conditions and demographics of the health fair participants. This data will be used to apply for a Health & Human Services grant to help fund these health fairs in order to better target pediatric obesity, a huge American problem but more prevalent in minority children. A second site near the United Center is being launched in the fall. Similar data will be collected and assistance is needed for this site as well.

    Qualifications of a Student:
Minimum GPA 3.0; Typing 40wpm; Knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Excel; Interest in public health or medicine; Spanish fluency helpful but not required.

Brief Summary of what is expected from the student:
My ideal student would (under close supervision - we can train the student as long as the student can effectively use Microsoft Office): Help collect data at health fairs; Maintain the budget for the health outreach project; Attend meetings with community contacts; Help coordinate activity schedule; Help summarize data; Help prepare prevalence study manuscript and submit to local/regional/national meetings; Help start HHS grant to prevent pediatric obesity in inner-city Chicago.
