Prof. Bailey's research focuses on historical patterns of racial mob violence in the American South. She has recently constructed a database using the census records of people who were publicly threatened with lynching, but not actually killed. These primary documents are currently in preparation for broader dissemination to the public.
The duties of this position are central in that process:
1) Prepare primary documents and associated research notes for uploading onto a publicly-available website, where researchers, activist, and community historians can access them. The website currently distributes similar data for people who were lynched.
2) Participate in creating documentation to help "end users" access and effectively use the documents we have collected.
3) Assist with the administration of transitioning the files to a public "crowd source" website where volunteers will enter the information from the census records. This data entry will allow greater access to information on people threatened with lynching, and also facilitate comparison to people who were actually lynched. The student will review volunteer data entry results and participate in the final preparation of these data. Minimum time commitment in hours per week: 5 Qualifications of a Student:
No research experience is required -- in fact, this is a training position! It is an ideal opportunity for someone who is majoring or minoring in sociology, history, or one of UIC's racial/ethnic studies departments, or undergraduates earning the social justice minor. Students who are juniors or seniors are also given high levels of consideration. The ability to read cursive is required. Brief Summary of what is expected from the student:
Note that this person will be fully trained in all aspects of their responsibilities on the project.
• Prepare electronic case files for distribution in a public access website.
• Write and edit drafts of technical documentation.
• Analyze results of other volunteers’ data entry, and make recommendations regarding possible discrepancies.
• Adhere to research protocol in all aspects of work.
• Fully document all aspects of research, including searching and case selection.
• Participate regularly in research-related discussions with faculty member, including attending weekly meetings and communicating via email.
• Other responsibilities may emerge over the course of the project.
