Research Interest:
Students enrolled in my Psychology 396 Directed Study will learn about and contribute to a randomized controlled trial of a social and emotional learning curriculum designed for out of school time settings. Students will be trained in data collection methods and will conduct interviews, gather data, and help manage data. Participating students will learn about: (1) the field of evidence-based social and emotional learning, (2) program evaluation design, and (3) data collection methods. This is an ideal experience for students interested in hands-on exposure to the application of social science to evaluate impact in real-world settings.

Minimum time commitment in hours per week: 8

Qualifications of a Student:
Preferred major: Psychology. Preferred coursework completed:
Research methods, Community and prevention research or Community psychology

Brief Summary of what is expected from the student:
Students will: (1) Read foundational research on the impact of social and emotional learning programs on student outcomes, (d) conduct telephone and on-site interviews with out-of-school time staff (3) conduct site visits to out-of-school time sites, (4) assist with data entry and cleaning, (5) review out-of-school time administrative records, (6) support sites in administering surveys and other assessments to students, and (7) write a paper summarizing their experience.
