Participating in the Chancellor’s Undergraduate Research Awards program: Yes
Research Interest:
My current active research areas include high-dimensional classification and clustering, design of experiments, and some others.
(1) Research on high-dimensional classification: Classification places individuals or units into groups. Examples include medical diagnosis, voice or handwriting recognition, document classification, and many other fields. We currently have active research projects on classifying DNA and protein based on their nucleotide sequences or amino acid sequences.
(2) Research on design of experiment: We are exploring optimal and efficient designs to investigate the effect of several factors under generalized linear models, which is important for many scientific and industrial experiments. We also develop algorithms for searching optimal designs.

http://www.math.uic.edu/~jyang06/publication.html Minimum time commitment in hours per week: 4 Qualifications of a Student:
A student is expected to have strong research interest and qualify for one of the three categories:
[1] good course performance in linear algebra and calculus;
[2] good course performance in probability and/or statistics;
[3] good experience in computer programming, preferably in using R, and/or web database construction. Brief Summary of what is expected from the student:
The student is expected to help with one of the four tasks:
[1] solving some optimization problems in mathematics;
[2] exploring characteristics of some probability distributions;
[3] collecting data from online public-accessible bioinformatics database;
[4] developing algorithms and programming.
