I'm working on a project called The Illinois Deaths in Custody Project (IDCP) (http://ildeathsincustody.org/). IDCP is an initiative including artists, scholars, and community-based organizations, that documents, archives, mourns and researches the deaths of all people who die in custody in Illinois. IDCP also offers free public workshops that prepare participants to gain and share reports and stories about those dying while incarcerated.
IDCP invites the online submission of death reports, eulogies, and other testimonies and documents, partnering with organizations doing related work. In 2016 IDCP partnered with the American Friends Service Committee and Uptown People’s Law Center to host, “FOIA-The-Man,” a workshop teaching how to file Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests. Since then we have offered additional workshops and events.
Our team continues to file FOIAs; research conditions of dying and healthcare in IDOC; document what happens to effects and bodies when people die in custody; network with allied organizations. Minimum time commitment in hours per week: 3 Qualifications of a Student:
