Research Interest:
Dr. Vonderheid's interests include the quality, efficiency and costs of health services to reduce health disparities, especially among low-income, ethnic minority women and their families. She is currently involved in the following main research activities: testing the effects of eliminating sugar-sweetened beverages on glycemic control in diabetics in an inpatient setting. Secondary outcomes include symptoms of anxiety and depression, resource use and costs; examining the effectiveness of structured preoperative education on patient outcomes and nursing costs in adult patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy surgery in the ambulatory setting.

Minimum time commitment in hours per week: 8

Qualifications of a Student:
Great opportunities for highly organized,independent persons. Implementation of Group Care Position: Prefer experience with analysis using SPSS or other statistical software, proficient computer skills (e.g., Microsoft office); and has excellent verbal and written communication skills. Days and hours can be flexible; at least one weekly meeting with independent work on other days. Available for a minimum of 8 hours per week.

Brief Summary of what is expected from the student:
Our priority is to enter and analyze data. We will also conduct reviews of the literature, prepare manuscripts, develop posters and slides for oral presentations. If able to travel to a hospital in northwest suburb (about 20 miles from UIC), then can assist with data collection that involves medical record extraction and telephone surveys. May conduct basic statistical analysis (e.g., descriptive stats) of quantitative data and more advanced statistical analysis under supervision of Dr. Vonderheid; and other study-related activities to support the project(s).
