Research Interest:

Measuring Drosophila brain chemical content in relation to behavior.

Image processing. Microfluidics measurements of viscosity. Developing an automated method to measure plug volumes in capillary channnels.

Minimum time commitment in hours per week: 6

Qualifications of a Student:

Sophomore, junior or senior standing; Chemistry, biochemistry, or psychology major; Interest in neuroscience.

Sophomore, junior or senior standing; Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or other engineering.

Brief Summary of what is expected from the student:

Undergraduate projects are chemistry and measurement focused. These involve learning capillary electrophoresis chemical separations and handling micro- to nanoliter samples. The goals of all projects are aimed at relating the chemical content of fruit fly blood, brain homogenate, and behavior (usually sleep-wake cycling). Students experienced in chemical analysis methodologies in the lab can become involved in biological and neuroscience aspects.

Undergraduate project is the measurement of plug flow in a microfluidic channel. Video images will be processed with software to automate plug lengths which relate to a novel viscosity measurement. Results will be fed into MatLab or spreadsheet for analysis.
