Research Interest:
The Sanchez lab utilizes cutting edge mass spectrometry techniques to study the chemical language microbes use to communicate with one another and their surroundings. We aim to exploit this chemical communication to understand how microbes function in and affect hosts in different health and disease states. We have a number of projects in the lab (1) cheese-derived microbial communities and (2) biofilm formation (3) ovarian cancer and (4) drug discovery. Our work is very interdisciplinary and encompasses aspects of natural products drug discovery, mass spectrometry, and host biology. Minimum time commitment in hours per week: 10 Qualifications of a Student:
Biological science majors preferred (biology, chemistry, bioengineering, etc). Must be enrolled in, or have taken (and enjoyed) organic chemistry Brief Summary of what is expected from the student:
The majority of the research will involve basic microbiological techniques (inoculations from frozen stocks, getting up microbial interaction pairs, fermentation, etc). Student will be frequently working with microbial samples under sterile conditions.
