Research Interest:
As a reitred faculty, I no longer have the time and active projects to mentor students. I use the WHO primary health care model of health worker-community collaboration to bring health promotion interventions to communities. I have just completed a major study in Malawi focusing on young women and their entire reproductive health needs, including HIV prevention and family planning to avoid unintended pregnancy. There is a great deal of data from this study that students can help with, analyzing results and preparing publications. I have recently been funded for an implementation study in Malawi that is taking our successful 6-session peer group intervention for HIV prevention and testing whether communities can offer and sustain this program. We are currently preparing a training video and manual for community peer group leaders who volunteer to be in the study. Minimum time commitment in hours per week: 8 Qualifications of a Student:
Strong interest in international health and in research. Able to commit to more than one semester (of course if you don't like the work or have new obligations that's okay but I prefer to start with students who'll be around for a while.) Good writing skills are important. While I give preference to honors students I will also accept other well-qualified students. Brief Summary of what is expected from the student:
Because my international project is located in Malawi, the work we do here in Chicago is supportive of the Malawi team. Student volunteers do a lot of integrative literature reviews and can be involved in publications, but there is not much opportunity to do or observe the "hands-on" research activities in Malawi (unless of course you are able to self-fund).
