Research Interest:
The Human-in-Mind Engineering Research (HiMER) Lab designs, implements, and evaluates emerging interactive systems from the human factors perspective to advance the well-being and the quality of life of the people. Specific research areas we work in our lab include human-computer interaction, human performance/behavior modeling, transportation safety, human interactions with modern emerging technology (e.g., augmented/virtual reality, collaborative robot, and artificial intelligence). Students are expected to work on collaborative research projects with other UIC groups in robotics, computer science, and health science. We are a human factors engineering research lab to seek interdisciplinary research collaborations with a wide range of fields including engineering, social sciences, and learning sciences.

Minimum time commitment in hours per week: 8

Qualifications of a Student:
Minimum qualifications: - Major in engineering, computer science, engineering psychology, or closely related fields - Junior or Senior level student - Minimum GPA of 3.3 Preferred qualifications: -Strong background in statistical analysis and programming -Oral and written fluency in English -Experience in human subject studies using experimental and physiological measurements (e.g., eye-tracking, motion-tracking, EEG, EMG, ECG) -Experience in scholarly writing and publications

Brief Summary of what is expected from the student:
We are looking for students with a willingness to learn new skills, self-motivation, and eagerness to undertake challenging problems. Tasks may include literature review; computer programming; preparing IRB applications; recruitment and scheduling of research participants; data collection and analyses; and writing reports and publications, depending on students' skill and interest.
