Title: Professor

Participating in the Chancellor’s Undergraduate Research Awards program: No

Research Interest:
UPDATED JULY 2013: PROFESSOR DE MARCO WILL BE ON LEAVE FOR THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2013-2014 AND IS NOT ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS. My research is in an area of pure mathematics called complex dynamics: my most recent work combines techniques from complex analysis and number theory to study dynamical systems. A dynamical system is one which evolves in time (think: planetary motion, weather patterns, etc). In my research, we take ultra-simplified models of chaotic systems, and we study their geometric, arithmetic, and analytic features.

Minimum time commitment in hours per week: 6

Qualifications of a Student:
Mathematics major or a student with serious interest in math. Preferably in 3rd or 4th year of study. A student should have completed Math 215, or equivalent, to be able to understand and write a coherent mathematical proof.

Brief Summary of what is expected from the student:
Projects vary. For students with less experience, it could be a reading course on a fun topic not covered in standard curriculum. For students with computer experience, it could be mathematical experimentation. For students with stronger math background, we might discover a new theorem or two.

NOTE: This researcher is currently not accepting applications for the Undergraduate Research Experience program.
