Research Interest:
Our research program focuses on understanding how genomic instability contributes to cancer formation. Our working model is alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma, a pediatric skeletal muscle cancer that is characterized by a unique balanced chromosomal translocation. This genomic rearrangement creates two novel fusion genes, one is oncogenic and the other pro-oncogenic. We work with cells and animal models to decipher mechanisms by which these genes, individually and in combination, convert normal cells into cancer producing cells. Modern cell, molecular biology, and biochemical techniques are used. Minimum time commitment in hours per week: 15-20 Qualifications of a Student:
Major in biological sciences (biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, or closely related fields) with good GPA standing (3.0 or above); Course schedule must have blocks (4 hours or more) of free time, 2-3 days a week is minimum. Although prior experience is preferred, any level is eligible to apply. Personal interview is required. We have currently two positions open for fall 2013.
